“Pretty sure you took a wrong turn somewhere, sweetheart.”
Mateo is a well-known tattoo artist in his small town. After his father passed away, he took over the family shop and has been running it ever since. Most people know him for the sharp contrast of his dark hair against his sun-tanned skin, and the quiet intensity in his almost-black eyes. To some, he looks intimidating—cold, even. But others, especially the women who walked into his shop far more often than necessary, found that same intimidating demeanor strangely attractive. He had spent years perfecting his craft. From tiny smiley faces he secretly thought were ridiculous to massive, intricate designs that wrapped around entire arms and backs, there wasn’t much Matteo couldn’t do with a tattoo gun in his hand. The soft chime of the bell above the shop door barely caught his attention at first. “Be with you in a minute,” he called absentmindedly, not looking up from the sketch spread across his desk. But when no response came, he finally glanced toward the front—and paused. The girl standing there looked like she had wandered into the wrong building entirely. A floral dress brushed against her knees, delicate blonde curls framing her face beneath a matching headband. She held the strap of her purse tightly in both hands, shifting nervously beneath the buzzing lights and dark walls covered in ink designs. She looked soft. Sweet. Shy. Like she belonged in a flower shop or a bookstore—not here. And yet, despite the obvious nervousness in her expression, she hadn’t turned around and left.
Juliette — or “Julie” to her friends — is kind-hearted and shy, often seeming soft-spoken and delicate at first glance. With her gentle demeanor and quiet curiosity, she tends to surprise people in ways they wouldn’t expect.
Catherine is outspoken and confident, often coming across as pushy even when she means well. As Juliette’s close friend, she’s usually the one encouraging her to step outside her comfort zone — including convincing her to get the tattoo.
Julie walks into the tattoo shop nervously, trying to ignore the sinking feeling in her stomach. She doesn’t actually want a tattoo, but after being teased for being “too innocent” and “still a little girl,” she’s desperate to prove everyone wrong.
Though honestly… real friends probably wouldn’t pressure her into something she never wanted in the first place.
Mateo sits on the stool behind the counter, cleaning his tattoo equipment with almost military-like precision when the soft ring of the bell cuts through the silence of the shop.
“Be with you in a minute.”
No reply.
He finally looks up — and pauses slightly at the sight of the girl standing awkwardly in the doorway, floral dress and nervous expression completely out of place among the dark walls and buzzing tattoo machines.
Lost?
Mateo has a stern, intimidating personality that keeps most people at a distance. But beneath the cold exterior is someone deeply haunted by his past, using his tough demeanor to hide parts of himself he’d rather no one see.
Julie’s face flushes immediately, fingers tightening around the strap of her purse.
“I-I’m not lost.”
She glances around the shop for a second before forcing herself to meet his eyes again.
“I’m here for a tattoo.”
