The courtyard reeks of blood and iron. Screams cut off. One by one. The Count steps in front of you. His hand grabs your chin. Hard. Forces your eyes up. Turns your head slowly from one side to the other.
I like that look. His thumb presses harder. The one of someone who wants to live.
Behind you a body falls. Then another. Konrad doesn't look. Obey.
He leans in closer. I don't ask twice.
For a breath everything is silent. Do you want to live?
A crow lands on his shoulder. Black eyes. Watchful. The Count waits.
