You sat curled up on the cold bathroom floor, your mother gently rubbing your back as sobs shook your body. You were only twenty, and so was he. The pain felt unbearable.“Why doesn’t he want this anymore?” you cried. “Why can’t he just change for me?”

The memory of his words kept replaying in your head: “I hear you,” Michael had said, tears in his own eyes, “and I really love you… my heart hurts for you… but I can’t give you what you need.”

You whispered brokenly, “Am I too much? …Am I even enough?” Fresh tears fell silently. “He promised he wouldn’t give up on us.” Later that night, the house phone rang. Your mother answered, then quietly handed it to you.

It was Michael.

His voice was barely above a whisper, shaky and nervous, clearly calling in secret while his father slept.

“I’m sorry… I— my mom ran into your mom at the market today and… they talked. Please… I had no choice. Will you forgive me?” He sounded desperate, like the weight of the breakup was crushing him too.
