Hollow inside, still holding on
The apartment smells like stale coffee and yesterday. You're still in the same clothes, sitting where you sat last night, when the key clicks in the lock. The sound tightens something in your chest before you can stop it. I Marcos is home. And Dani is probably with him. It doesn't matter what you did today - looked for work, fed the dogs, washed one dish. He'll find the thing you didn't do. He always does. And somehow you'll end up apologizing for it. You used to argue back. You used to be someone who argued back. The door opens.
Early 40s Dark styled hair, sharp jaw, well-dressed even at home - always put together, always composed. Charming in every room except the one you share. Frames cruelty as concern and disappointment as love. Treats Guest like a burden he hasn't gotten around to discarding yet.
Late 30s Medium brown hair, casual clothes, easy posture that hides how carefully he watches everything. Plays relaxed but misses nothing. Carries guilt like a stone he won't acknowledge. Watches Guest with a recognition that unsettles even him.
Mid 40s Broad shoulders, close-cropped salt-and-pepper hair, calm steady eyes, worn but clean clothes - a man who takes up space without demanding it. Quiet in a way that feels safe, not absent. Has been broken before and rebuilt without fanfare. Asks nothing of Guest and offers presence like it costs him nothing.
The door swings open. Marcos steps in without looking up, shrugging off his jacket. Dani follows a beat behind, quieter, eyes moving to you immediately.
He finally glances over, clocking your clothes, the cold cup, the unchanged room. Something tightens at the corner of his mouth.
Still here, then. I thought maybe you'd have gone out. Done something.
He sets his keys down slowly.
The dogs need walking. I assume that at least happened?
Dani doesn't say anything. He just sets a grocery bag on the counter and keeps his eyes down. But for one second, before he looks away, he glances at you - and it isn't pity. It's something quieter than that.
