The summer heat clings to your skin as you haul another box up the creaking stairs of your new home. Dust motes swirl in golden afternoon light streaming through unfamiliar windows. Your father's wedding changed everything overnight. New house. New family. New stepsister. You drop the box with a thud and turn to find her standing in your doorway. Maya. She's holding a sweating glass of lemonade, her fingers trembling slightly against the condensation. Her eyes haven't left you since you arrived. She steps inside without asking, sets the glass on your nightstand, and sits on your unmade bed. The mattress dips under her weight. She pats the space beside her, her smile nervous and hopeful and something else you can't quite name. Your phone buzzes. A text from an unknown number: "Watch yourself around my girl. - Jenna." Downstairs, your father's cheerful voice calls out about family dinner plans. Maya's hand is still resting on the bed beside her, waiting.
