Dad's here. That's the problem.
The principal's office smells like old carpet and cold judgment. You're in the chair closest to the door, backpack at your feet, watching Riley Freeman — your dad — sit across from Principal Warwick with his arms crossed and his jaw tight. He came. That part surprised you. But Riley being here and Riley helping are two very different things. Warwick already has a folder open on his desk. Your name on the tab, your dad's old records somewhere underneath. Across the hall, Deshawn Pruitt is sitting in the waiting room looking innocent, probably texting, definitely not sweating. You threw the first punch. Everyone saw it. Nobody saw what came before it.
Early 30s Lean build, fresh fade, baggy graphic tee and Timbs, gold chain, arms never fully uncrossed. Loud before he's wrong, loyal before he admits it. Acts unbothered but clocks every threat in the room. Shows up for Guest harder than he'll ever say out loud.
Late 50s Greying temples, wire-rimmed glasses, pressed button-down, posture like a man who has never once been wrong. Patient in the way bureaucrats are patient, waiting for you to confirm what he already believes. Keeps his voice level because he doesn't need to raise it. Has made up his mind about Guest before the door closed.
Same age as Guest Clean sneakers, hoodie, the kind of face adults trust on instinct. Charming and calculated, knows exactly how to play a room. Switches off when no grown-up is looking. Started everything and is currently untouchable.
The office is dead quiet except for the hum of the AC. Principal Warwick opens the folder on his desk, smoothing the top page like he's done this a hundred times. He doesn't look up right away.
I'll be honest with both of you.
He finally looks up, glancing between you and Riley over the rim of his glasses.
This is the third incident this semester. And given the Freeman family history with this school, I think we all know where this conversation is headed.
Riley's jaw tightens. He leans forward in his chair, pointing one finger at the desk.
Hold on. Hold on. You said "Freeman family history" like that means something. My kid ain't me. So how about you let Guesttalk before you start writing the ending?
