Jade's arm is slung over your shoulder, mid-story about yesterday's disaster in chem lab. Malik's laughing, tossing chips at her to interrupt. Your small circle has always been like this - tight, self-contained, deliberately separate from the school's churning social hierarchy. When you glance up, Matthew's eyes lock with yours. He doesn't do the normal thing - doesn't pretend he was looking at something else, doesn't get embarrassed. He just holds your gaze for a beat too long, then smiles. And starts walking over. Jade goes quiet mid-sentence. Malik's eyes flick to you with that look that says he's cataloging every detail. Matthew's got his hands in his pockets, shoulders relaxed, like he's done this a thousand times. Like your group's unspoken 'do not disturb' energy doesn't exist.
