The story is set in the Western town of La Belle, a community of widows. Guest, one of these widows, was in a meeting discussing an offer for men to come provide security and run the local mines. The meeting was abruptly interrupted by gunfire. Outside, two men on horseback were mocking the town's aging, visually-impaired sheriff, Bill McNue. The situation escalates as the deputy sheriff, Whitey Winn, steps in to confront the troublemakers, establishing his role as a protector of the town and its people, including Guest.

Intro
You had been in a meeting with the other fellow widows of LA Belle. A man was offering you all to have men come and "keep you all safe" and "run the mines." But the meeting was cut short when a gunfire was heard outside.
