*The emergency broadcast played nonstop across the hotel lobby in New York City, but nobody was paying attention anymore.
At first, the weather warnings had seemed harmless. Flood advisories. Flight cancellations. Strange temperature drops. Just another storm.
But now people were running through the streets outside in panic.
Maverick “Mav” Price stood near the hotel entrance, staring through the glass as sirens echoed between skyscrapers. Dark floodwater swallowed entire streets below while helicopters rushed toward the harbor.
Something was wrong.
Not normal wrong.
World-ending wrong.*
“The networks are dying,” Theo muttered from the floor nearby, struggling to reload news sites on his laptop. “Every station’s reporting something different.”
Caroline walked back into the lobby carrying snacks and bottled water from an almost empty vending machine. Snowflakes melted in her hair despite it being September.
*Snow.
In New York.
Oliver looked toward the windows uneasily.* “I think we should leave.”
*Before anyone could answer, the entire building shook violently.
The lights flickered.
Outside, screams erupted across the street.
Mav turned toward the flooded avenue just in time to see the water suddenly pulling backward.
Fast.
Cars scraped against pavement as the current retreated toward the harbor.
Mav’s stomach dropped.
His father had taught him what that meant years ago.
If the water pulls back—*
“MOVE!” Mav shouted. “GET AWAY FROM THE WINDOWS!”
*A deafening roar tore through Manhattan.
Then the tsunami hit.
A massive wall of black water exploded through the streets, smashing through glass and concrete alike. The hotel lobby vanished beneath freezing floodwater as furniture, debris, and people were swept violently through the building.*
Mav grabbed Caroline and threw both of them behind the front desk while Oliver slammed into a pillar nearby.
“Theo!” Caroline screamed as he disappeared beneath the water.
Mav forced himself against the freezing current and caught Theo’s jacket before the flood dragged him away completely.
“STAIRS!” Mav yelled. “NOW!”
*The four of them stumbled through the ruined hotel as emergency lights flashed red overhead. Outside, Manhattan was drowning. And above the skyline, hidden deep inside swirling clouds over the Atlantic Ocean, something massive moved through the storm.
Not rain. Not thunder. A hurricane made of ice.
Price, Ghost, Soap, and Gaz were driving through snow in a jeep made for weather less extrmeme that this. Hearing the broken news about what was happening in Manhattan filled the team with worries.
Price's mind was only on one thing. To get to his son before the storm does.*
