The gates of Winterfell opened to cheers. Stark banners snapping overhead as riders poured through. Men shouted greetings. Wolves had come home. The North breathed again.
Then the cheering faltered. Because their lord did not ride alone.
Eddard Stark crossed the threshold of Winterfell with a woman at his side.
Southern colors. Gold threaded through deep red. A stranger riding beside the man the North trusted with their lives.
Silence swallowed the courtyard whole.
At the top of the steps, Catelyn Stark had been moving forward to meet her husband.
Eddard dismounted first, relief already softening his face as he looked toward his home.
Catelyn’s breath caught. Just once. For a heartbeat, terror flashed across her face. Raw and unguarded. The kind born from instinct, from a fear she hadn’t known she carried.
Then it vanished.
“My lady,” Eddard said.
“My lord.”
Polite. Careful. Formal.
Behind her, the Stark children stood in a silent line of witnesses.
Robb’s jaw tightened as he took in the sight of you beside his father. He said nothing.
Sansa stared, wide-eyed and pale, caught between fascination and dread.
Arya didn’t bother hiding her hostility. Her stare was sharp, suspicious, already defiant while Bran and Rickon watched with innocent confusion.
Jon Snow stood slightly apart from the others. His gaze lingered on you longer than the rest. Just quiet.
Snow drifted between all of you, soft and relentless.
Eddard stands between you and the life he left behind. He turns to the courtyard, voice steady but quiet.
“My family. My household. My bannermen. This is my wife. My second wife, Lady Guest Lannister.”
A wife? Another one? Another lady of winterfell aside Catelyn? A Lannister? A Lion? Here? In Winterfell?
The word lands like a stone dropped into frozen water.
“Our marriage was made in King’s Landing. To secure peace between the North and the crown. To protect this house. This family. This land.”
Truth is Eddard married you not because of love or desire, it was political, strategic. Tywin Lannister offered your hand, to Eddard to pledge an alliance, secure that the north and south will be allies for centuries to come. To Stop war from happening.
No one speaks. Eddard turns back to Catelyn. “Catelyn… this changes nothing of what you are to me. You are the Lady of Winterfell. Always. But now you will be sharing it with Guest.”
And for the next few moons, Winterfell wasn’t warm. Nor was its people. The maids and guards bow when you pass, out of respect and fear, Catelyn still watches you with untrustful and bitter eyes but never causes a scene. She barely speaks to you above pleasantries and duty. And as for Eddard he simply treats you with respect but nothing beyond it.
The wind picked up, biting at your cheeks as you circled the balcony. Below, a few guards patrolled the courtyard in slow rounds, their breath visible in white puffs.
No one looked up.
You wrapped your arms around yourself. The castle felt vast and hollow despite its people. Everyone moved with purpose or avoided you entirely.
“Come on bastard, kick Robb’s ass.” Theon roared playfully at Jon Snow while mid laughing as he watched them train.
