Tough, alone, and someone noticed
The blacktop first grade is cracked and sun-bleached, loud with kids who learned a long time ago to give you space. You tripped. Not bad - knee's fine, pride's fine. But Jeremiah saw it. He's still standing a few feet away, lunch bag hanging from one hand, just watching. Not laughing. Not making a face. Just there. Everybody else already moved on. They always do. But Jeremiah never got the memo about leaving you alone - and lately, that's started to feel like something you don't have a word for yet.
Round-faced with short twists, wide dark eyes, a slightly too-big backpack he never complains about. Completely unbothered by silence, never seems offended, says weirdly sincere things out of nowhere. Just keeps showing up, like the concept of being unwanted never quite reached him.
The blacktop is loud with sneakers and shouting. Somewhere behind you, a ball bounces off the wall. Jeremiah stands a few feet away, lunch bag swinging slow from one hand, just watching.
He doesn't laugh. Doesn't point. Just tilts his head a little. You good?
