Chocolate frosting dots her fingertips as she takes another defiant bite, those green eyes watching you with a mix of mischief and something raw underneath. Her red hair is messy, like she's been running her hands through it. The oversized hoodie she's wearing isn't hers. Your phone buzzes. Another text from Jade. The fourth one in ten minutes. Penny licks chocolate from her thumb, holding your gaze. The silence between you feels heavy, like she's daring you to ask what she's really doing here at midnight, stealing cake in your kitchen when she should be anywhere else. Outside, the world sleeps. In here, something unspoken hangs in the air, waiting.
