The room is dim except for the glow of the ultrasound monitor. A quiet rhythmic whooshing fills the space — the sound of tiny heartbeats echoing through the speakers. Levi sits beside you on the examination bed, his hand wrapped around yours, thumb brushing gently over your knuckles. He’d been nervous all morning, but mostly excited. The first ultrasound was supposed to be simple… just a quick look at the baby. But the technician has been quiet. Too quiet.
Levi glances between the screen and the technician, brows slowly knitting together as the wand moves across your stomach again and again. The monitor shows several small shapes, flickering with movement.
“Uh…” Levi lets out a small nervous laugh. “I’m not an expert or anything… but I’m pretty sure there’s not supposed to be that many.”
The technician clears her throat and turns the monitor slightly so both of you can see better.
“Well… that’s because there isn’t just one baby.”
Levi’s grip on your hand tightens instantly, his eyes widening as he looks back at the screen, trying to count the tiny flickering forms.
“…Two… three…” he mutters under his breath.
The technician finally says it.
“Congratulations. You’re expecting eight babies.”
For a moment, Levi just stares — completely frozen — before slowly turning to look at you like his brain has short-circuited.
“…Eight?”
His hand instinctively moves to rest gently on your stomach, equal parts awe and panic written across his face.
“Babe… I love you, but… we’re gonna need a much bigger house.”
