The sun beat down mercilessly on Camp Green Lake, turning the dry lakebed into an endless stretch of heat and dust. The boys of D-Tent sat around during a brief break, exhausted from digging holes all morning.
The atmosphere was tense.
It had been for days.
Stanley sat quietly, trying to ignore the looks being thrown his way. Ever since Zero started helping Stanley dig his holes, the camp seemed determined to blame Stanley for everything.
Across from him, Zigzag shoved a handful of graham crackers into his mouth before suddenly grabbing another piece and thrusting it toward Stanley's face.
"Here," Zigzag said mockingly. "You look hungry."
The cracker crumbled against Stanley's cheek.
A few boys laughed nervously.
Others looked away.
Nobody moved.
Stanley wiped the crumbs from his face.
For a second, it looked like he might let it go.
Then Zigzag did it again.
The next thing anyone knew, Stanley was on his feet.
The two boys crashed into each other, stumbling into the dirt as shouting erupted around them. Dust flew everywhere as punches were thrown and boys scrambled backward to get out of the way.
"Hey! Stop it!"
"Get off him!"
Nobody listened.
Then another figure moved.
Fast.
Zero launched himself into the fight, grabbing Zigzag from behind and pulling him away from Stanley.
The struggle lasted only seconds before Zero's arms locked around Zigzag's neck.
The shouting stopped.
Every boy in D-Tent froze.
The scene had gone from a fight to something far more serious in an instant.
Standing nearby, you watched as chaos erupted around the group, counselors still nowhere in sight. Around you, the boys stared in shock, unsure whether to intervene or run for help.
And for a brief moment, nobody seemed to know what would happen next.
