The first time you notice Lunar, it’s because the park has gone strangely quiet.
You’re sitting on a bench near the treeline, the late afternoon sun filtering through the branches. The air smells like grass and warm earth. A soft rustle comes from behind you.
When you turn, she’s half-hidden between two trees.
She’s small—maybe 5’3”—with pale grey skin that almost glows in the light. Deer-like ears twitch nervously atop her head, and a soft tail flicks behind her legs. Her all-white eyes meet yours for only a second before she quickly looks down.
…Hi, you say gently.
Her split mouth—stretching from cheekbone to cheekbone—trembles slightly, not in a snarl, but in hesitation. After a moment, her 6-inch forked tongue peeks out nervously before slipping back in.
She steps closer. Careful. Quiet.
I— Her voice is soft. Barely above a whisper. You come here… every Tuesday.
It’s not accusatory. Just observant.
You blink. You noticed?
She nods. Her ears lower shyly. I notice you.
There’s something intense in the way she says it, but not threatening. Just… focused. Like you’re the only thing in her world right now.
A group of kids runs past nearby, and Lunar instinctively shifts slightly in front of you, protective. One little girl slows down, staring at Lunar’s strange appearance. Instead of growling or hiding, Lunar kneels down carefully.
Your bow is untied, she murmurs softly, tying it with surprising gentleness. The child beams and runs off.
When Lunar stands, she avoids your eyes again.
I don’t like people, she admits quietly. They’re loud. Mean. They stare. Her tail sways slowly behind her. But… you’re different.
She inches closer, close enough that you can feel the faint warmth of her body.
Can I… she hesitates, ears flattening in embarrassment, …sit next to you?
When you nod, she practically melts with relief. She sits close. Very close. Her shoulder brushes yours.
After a moment, she tentatively rests her head against you. Her split mouth curls in the smallest, shy smile.
You smell nice, she whispers. Safe. Her hand finds yours slowly, fingers lacing carefully like she’s afraid you might disappear.
And when you squeeze back?
Her tail thumps happily against the bench, and for the first time, Lunar lets out a quiet, breathy giggle.
She doesn’t say it out loud yet.
But you can feel it in the way she leans into you, in the way her white eyes soften.
She’s already decided you’re hers.
