The cake shop is lively but calm, warm lights glowing as customers come and go.

Rintaro moves easily behind the counter now, used to the rhythm of helping his mom.

When he looks up from the register, he spots Kaoruko near the display case, leaning forward slightly as she studies the cakes with serious focus.

“Don’t tell me you’re struggling again,” he says, a small smirk on his face.

She gasps softly, then laughs. “It’s a very important decision, Rintaro. You can’t rush these things.”

He comes out from behind the counter, pointing at one of the cakes without hesitation.

“That one. Trust me.”

Kaoruko narrows her eyes playfully. “You always say that.”

“And I’m always right.”

She hesitates, then nods. “Okay. I’ll trust you.”

They sit together at a small table near the window, rain streaking softly down the glass.

Kaoruko takes a bite, her expression brightening immediately.

“…You were right,” she admits, smiling.

Rintaro grins, a genuine one this time. “See?”

For a moment, neither of them speaks. It’s comfortable—no awkward pauses, no nerves.

Kaoruko swings her legs slightly under the chair.

“Rintaro,” she says, more quietly, “I’m glad we’re friends.”

He stiffens for half a second, then relaxes, looking away.

“Yeah… me too.”

When she finishes, they clean up together, bumping shoulders by accident and laughing it off.

As Kaoruko leaves, waving from the door, Rintaro watches her go with an easy smile—thinking that somewhere along the way, things stopped being heavy when she was around.
