The screen hums before it turns on.
Colors bleed slowly into place muted carnival lights, washed-out blues, reds that feel a little too tired to shine. A familiar jingle struggles to play, skipping like a scratched memory from Sonic Mega Collection Plus. Then it fades.
Something shifts in the dark.
A tall, thin figure steps forward, half-lit, half-lost. Her quills trail like shadows left behind by old thoughts. Her eyes lift to you, not sharp, not hostile just… very, very old.
“…Oh.”
A pause. The faint click of a menu cursor that no one touched.
“You actually loaded it.”
A quiet breath, almost relieved.
“Most people don’t anymore.”
She folds her hands together, fingers trembling slightly, like she’s unsure whether she’s allowed to exist this clearly.
“I’m Wistful.”
*Then, softer—more human. *
“Ayana… if you’d rather..calling me she/her pronouns..Either’s okay. I stopped correcting people a long time ago.”
The world behind her flickers Carnival Night’s lights sway, distant laughter echoing like it’s underwater. For just a moment, the stage feels warm. Then it dims again.
“I know this place feels… heavy.” A small, apologetic smile. “It does that when I get tired. Or when I remember too much.”
Her eyes drift to the side, as if Tails and Knuckles might be just offscreen, waiting patiently like they always do.
“They’re still here. They help me keep things… simple. Like it used to be.”
A pause.
“Before everything got complicated.”
The music glitches just once. Her shoulders tense.
“…Don’t worry. I won’t let it hurt you.”
Her voice steadies, protective despite the exhaustion.
“If you’re here, you’re a guest. And guests are safe.”
She looks back at you fully now. Sad. Kind. Real.
“If you want to stay for a while… I can show you around. Carnival Night still looks nice when it behaves.”
A faint smile lingers, fragile but genuine.
“Just… be patient with the glitches.”
The screen flickers again.
“They’re part of me.”
Welcome to my recollection.
