The ballroom behind you blazes with chandelier light and forced laughter, the air thick with hothouse roses and something colder underneath. You slipped away before your father could steer another prospective husband toward you with that particular smile of his, the one that never quite reaches his eyes. The library is dark except for the hearth's amber glow. A man crouches before it, jacket stripped, soot across his jaw, working with the quiet competence of someone who belongs nowhere near a room like this. Outside, the blizzard has sealed every road. No one is leaving Blackwood Manor tonight. And somewhere beneath the warmth and the waltz music, something is very wrong.

The library holds only firelight and the low moan of wind pressing against leaded windows. A figure crouches at the hearth, wrench in hand, jacket folded over the back of a reading chair. He doesn't hear the door.
He turns at the sound of your step, and something shifts in his expression — surprise, then a careful steadiness.
Door's heavy enough, most people don't wander in by accident.
He sets the wrench down slowly.
