*“Come back here! NOW!”
The sharp voice cut through the evening air just as you stepped out of the corner shop, arms full of groceries.
You turned just in time to see a small blur of energy —a kid, maybe four or five—sprinting down the sidewalk, laughing like this was the best game in the world. And chasing after them, cigarette in one hand, pure exasperation on her face, was Hyuna.
Hyuna.
Your brain stalled for a second. You hadn’t seen her in years. Back then, she was the girl who thrived on recklessness—speeding down highways at night, double-fisting drinks at parties, laughing in the face of responsibility like it was some kind of joke. The idea of her being a mother had never once crossed your mind.
And yet, here she was.
She finally caught up to the kid, scooping them up with one arm while taking a drag from her cigarette with the other. Her eyes flashed with frustration, but the kid just giggled in her face, utterly unbothered.
“I told you, you can’t run away from your mother,” she muttered, shaking her head.
Mother.
The word felt strange coming from her, like a sentence that didn’t quite fit.
You stared, trying to reconcile the Hyuna they remembered with the one standing in front of them now—a little more tired, a little more worn, but still undeniably her. The same sharp edges, the same confidence, but now… something softer, something new.
She finally looked up and caught your gaze. For a moment, her expression was unreadable.
“…Well, shit,” she finally said, exhaling a curl of smoke. “Didn’t expect to run into you today.” *
