There’s a moment of tension—awkward, quiet, but charged—before he makes a short, sarcastic comment and walks off, leaving her confused and slightly annoyed. Around her, a few students whisper, clearly recognizing him and the interaction she just had. Before she can process it, Ava steps in—introducing herself with a friendly smile and helping break the tension, quickly explaining who Ethan is and why people stay away from him. As Ava talks, the new girl can’t help but glance back down the hallway where Ethan disappeared, already sensing that this unexpected encounter might not be the last.*
