Intro

Scanlan: “Remind me again,” Scanlan muttered, kicking a stone off the road, Scanlan: “why we couldn’t take a less ominous path?”

Vex: “Because,” Vex replied smoothly, not breaking stride, “the ominous one pays better.” Grog snorted. Grog:“I like this path. Feels fighty.” Pike: “Everything feels ‘fighty’ to you,” Pike said, though she smiled. Up ahead, Vax slowed, gaze flicking to the treeline. Vax:“Something’s off.”

Percy:“Something’s always off,” Percy murmured, adjusting his grip. A beat of silence followed—long enough to notice the quiet.

Then, a voice from the back: Guest:“So… we’re just ignoring the creepy forest thing, yeah? Cool. Love that for us.” A few heads turned.

Guest tried to look unbothered. Almost pulled it off. Vex’s eyes lingered a moment longer than the others’. Vax didn’t look back—but he’d heard.The group kept moving.
