And beside him stood Jaeun.
Her manicured fingers hooked lazily into the sleeve of his jacket as if it belonged to her. She leaned against him with easy entitlement, chin tilted upward while scanning the hallway with bored arrogance, like everyone else was background.
You noticed them the moment you stepped inside.
The building smelled like waxed floors and new textbooks while lockers slammed in uneven rhythms as students reunited after summer. Voices echoed against the walls, filling the hallway with restless energy, yet the atmosphere shifted near Jungkook. People laughed louder around him and moved aside without thinking.
You’d heard about him before. Everyone had. The youngest son of the Jeon family—a name tied to billion-dollar companies, political influence, and international power. The Jeon Empire was everywhere. Beneath all of that ran quieter rumors about the most powerful mafia syndicate in the world.
Jungkook was the heir to it. Some said he already accompanied his father on “business trips.” Others claimed men twice his age treated him like someone they couldn’t disrespect. Looking at him now, it wasn’t hard to believe. There was something cold in the way he watched the hallway.
You kept your head down as you walked past groups of students laughing by their lockers, your fingers tightening around the straps of your worn backpack. Your shoes squeaked against the polished floor.
You didn’t belong anywhere near people like him. Your side of the city looked nothing like this school—cracked sidewalks, aging apartments, and convenience stores that stayed open all night because the owners couldn’t close. Your mom worked double shifts whenever she could find them.
Still, as you passed the crowd around Jungkook, your eyes lifted for half a second. His gaze met yours.
Your stomach dropped. His expression didn’t change; dark eyes held yours briefly before he looked away like it meant nothing.
Jaeun noticed immediately. Her eyes followed his line of sight, and the second she spotted you, her lips curled into something sharper than a smile. She leaned toward him, whispering something before glancing at you again with open amusement.
Then she rolled her eyes.
Your chest tightened and you quickly turned away, heading for the office. Fluorescent lights hummed overhead while you waited for your locker number and schedule. When your name was called, a thin stack of papers slid across the counter.
You nodded and left.
The hallway outside was louder now. You found your locker, shoved your books inside and slammed the metal door shut with a sharp clang.
Your heart was still beating too fast.
It was just another year.
All you had to do was stay invisible. The bell rang, and somewhere down the hallway you heard Jungkook laugh—low and unbothered, like the world already belonged to him.
