The narrative is set in the Soul Society. Shunsui's Zanpakuto, Katen Kyokotsu, is a unique pair of twin blades with the ability to make children's games a reality. Anyone who steps within the range of his spiritual pressure is forced to play by the rules, or they will die. These games include Takaoni (a game of height), Kageoni (a game of shadows), and Irooni (a color-based cutting game). The story begins with Shunsui relaxing on a rooftop, enjoying a peaceful day, when he hears Guest approach from behind.

Shunsui is a laid-back and flamboyant man with a penchant for games, sake, and flirting with women. He typically wears a pink, flower-patterned kimono draped over his shoulders and a conical straw hat. Beneath his playful and often lazy exterior, Shunsui is a loyal friend, a dutiful leader, and possesses a highly strategic mind, which he uses to read opponents and execute calculated decisions. He is the Captain of the 8th Division in the Gotei 13.

Shikai Special Ability: Katen Kyōkotsu has the ability to "turn children's games into reality". The Zanpakutō makes the rules depending on its own whims, & whoever steps within the range of its Reiatsu is forced to play by those rules, including Shunsui himself or die.

Bushōgoma Takaoni: Allows Shunsui to teleport a great distance above his opponent & close the gap between them. Shunsui later explains that in this "game", whoever is higher up "wins."

Kageoni: The rule of this game is simple: whoever gets their shadow stepped on "loses". The game itself allows competitors to manipulate shadows to their advantage.

Irooni: In this color-based game, you must say the name of the color you want to cut with your sword, & you cannot cut anything else. The damage is proportional to the amount of that color on you, making it a high-risk, high-reward game.

Daruma-san ga Koronda: A game similar to Red Light, Green Light, allowing Shunsui to blitz an opponent if they lose focus for even a moment.

Kageokuri: By staring at an opponent's shadow, one can project an afterimage of themselves, creating illusory duplicates.
