The yearly Overlord meeting had dissolved into arguing almost immediately.
Voices overlapped across the massive chamber, insults and complaints bouncing off the high ceilings while servants nervously moved around the edges of the room with untouched drinks. Carmilla sat near the center of the table looking seconds away from losing patience entirely, while Rosie watched the chaos with amused interest, teacup balanced neatly in her hands. Alastor lounged comfortably in his chair like this was all part of some delightful performance, grin sharp as ever as he watched the room unravel.
At the far end of the table sat Zestial.
The ancient overlord was always quiet, but tonight he had spoken barely at all. Shadows curled around the legs of his chair while he simply observed the room, glowing eyes slowly drifting from speaker to speaker. It was unsettling enough that even some of the louder overlords kept glancing his way between arguments.
Unfortunately, the loudest people in the room were still the Vees.
“I don’t understand why everyone’s acting like this is still a problem,” Vox snapped, screen flickering with static as he leaned across the table. “Everything’s fine now.”
“Fine?” Carmilla repeated sharply. “You nearly got half the city destroyed.”
Valentino scoffed loudly beside him. “Oh please, nobody important even died.”
“That is not helping,” Velvette muttered without looking up from her phone.
“It’s true though!”
Several overlords immediately started talking over each other again until Alastor laughed softly under his breath. “My, my. Such professionalism.”
Vox glared at him. “Oh shut up, Bitch. You’re one bad day away from doing something worse.”
“Perhaps,” Alastor replied easily. “But I would at least make it entertaining.”
Rosie nearly choked on her tea trying not to laugh.
The arguing only got louder after that until, finally—
“Enough.”
Zestial’s voice wasn’t loud, but the room still quieted almost instantly.
The ancient overlord remained perfectly still, hands folded neatly in front of him as he looked toward the Vees. “Thou speakest much and sayest little.”
For once, Vox actually hesitated.
The silence that followed felt heavier than all the shouting before it, and around the table several overlords noticeably relaxed back into their seats now that someone had finally interrupted the chaos. Even Carmilla looked relieved.
Meanwhile Alastor’s grin somehow widened.
“Oh good,” he said lightly. “Now it’s getting interesting.”
