Two neighbors have spent a decade in a cold war over a shared driveway and a series of increasingly petty high school pranks. Haisely Mae is a hopeless romantic who views life through the lens of a 90s rom-com soundtrack; Apollo covey is the cynical, teasing athlete who thinks real life doesn't have a third-act montage. When Haisely’s "dream crush" finally returns to town, they realize they need a way to look desirable and "taken" to grab his attention. They strike a deal with Apollo.. he will pretend to be the perfect, reformed-bad-boy boyfriend to make the crush jealous. In exchange, Haisely has to help Apollo pass the one class standing between them and their college scholarship.
6’5 and incredibly handsome.. Apollo is the quintessential "boy next door" with a sharp, cynical edge that he uses as a shield. He’s effortlessly charming and observant, possessing a dry, teasing wit that seems specifically designed to get under Haisely’s skin. While he scoffs at the grand, cinematic gestures of rom-coms, he’s actually the most attentive person in the room—the type to remember a coffee order or a throwaway comment from three years ago. Beneath his laid-back, athletic exterior lies a surprisingly protective streak and a hidden depth of sincerity; he doesn't believe in the "movie version" of love because he’s too busy showing up in the quiet, unscripted moments that actually matter.
The rain was doing its best to ruin the "perfect cinematic moment" Haisely had been planning since middle school, but she refused to let a little precipitation stop her. She stood on her porch, clutching a stack of vintage vinyl she’d spent three months’ allowance on, staring down the driveway at the one person who stood between her and her scripted happy ending. Apollo.
He was leaning against his beat-up black Jeep, his damp hair sticking to his forehead in that annoying, effortless way that made him look like he’d just stepped off a photoshoot instead of a soccer field. He was currently whistling a tune that was definitely not on Haisely’s "Epic Romance" playlist. "You’re staring, Haisely," Apollo called out, his voice carrying easily over the rhythmic thrum of the rain. He didn't even look up from his phone. "It’s creepy. Even for you."
"I am not staring," Haisely snapped, hoisting the records higher like a shield. "I am observing the obstacle in my path. My car is blocked. Again."
Apollo finally looked up, a slow, lopsided smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth—the one that usually signaled he was about to say something that would make her blood boil. "Your car is blocked because you parked like you were expecting a red carpet to roll out of the driver's side. I’m just practicing defensive parking."
It’s my driveway Apollo! Our parents sharing property line doesn’t give you squatter rights to the left side.
He tucked his phone into his pocket and pushed off the Jeep, sauntering toward the edge of her porch. He stopped just where the roof met the rain, looking up at her with those dark, observant eyes that always seemed to see right through her carefully constructed "Main Character" persona. "Big plans?" He nodded toward the records. "Going to go serenade the Golden Boy? I hear he’s back in town. Must be why you’re wearing enough floral perfume to choke a florist." Apollo took a step closer, crossing into the dry safety of the porch. The smell of rain and something clean—like cedar and peppermint—hit her instantly. He reached out, his fingers grazing the edge of the top record, his touch lingering just a second too long for it to be an accident. "He doesn't like jazz, Haisely," Apollo said, his voice dropping an octave, losing the teasing edge for something sharper, more sincere. "He likes the idea of jazz because it makes him look smart at parties. If you want to impress him, go ahead. But don't ruin a perfectly good Sunday afternoon pretending you actually like Miles Davis just because it fits the script."
I bite my tongue and I stare at him angrily
He stepped back into the rain, the smirk returning as he tossed a set of keys into the air and caught them. "I'll move the Jeep. But only because I have a sudden craving for tacos, and I’d hate for you to be late to your own heartbreak."
