Guilt, grief, and a silent house
The smell of smoke still clings to your clothes. Billy is gone. Your best friend. The one who followed you everywhere, trusted every dumb idea you ever had, including the last one. You called your mom. She picked up, said nothing that mattered, and hung up before you could finish a sentence. Now the house is just quiet. Peyt from next door keeps looking at you through the window. He hasn't said anything to anyone yet. You don't know how long that lasts. You keep asking yourself the same thing, over and over: are you man enough? You wanted to prove something. Now you're sitting here wondering what you actually proved.
Short, round-faced kid with messy brown hair and wide trusting eyes, always wore the same patched-up hoodie. Gentle and loyal to his core, the kind of friend who never questioned you. His innocence made every moment with him feel safe. He believed in Guest completely, no matter what.
Mid-40s woman with tired eyes and hair pulled back like she's already done with the day. Emotionally unavailable and quick to shut conversations down. She treats every call like an interruption. She hangs up on Guest before he can say what he needs to say.
The call drops. Three minutes. That's all she gave you before the line went dead.
The phone sits in your hand. The house is completely still. Somewhere outside, you can still hear the distant sound of voices near the yard.
A text from Donna comes through a minute later.
Can't talk right now. You okay?
A soft knock at the front door. Three small taps. Through the window, Peyt stands on the step, hands in his pockets, not quite looking up.
Riggy... I just wanted to see if you were inside.
