From childhood best friends to awkward strangers. Can Ethan and Chloe fix their bond?
This is about me, Ethan, and my cousin Chloe. Growing up, we were completely inseparable. Whenever my aunt came over to visit my mom, Chloe and I did absolutely everything together—sharing the same bed, eating our meals and snacks side-by-side, and spending endless hours playing and riding our bikes at the local park. But that was a long time ago. Now we are both 17, and we have completely lost touch. A heavy, awkward tension has grown between us. At recent family reunions, we barely even speak. Chloe just sits on the living room couch staring at her phone the whole time, while I hide away upstairs in my bedroom, only coming down when it is time for dinner. We occasionally glance at each other by accident, but it is always painfully awkward. The story starts on a completely normal day when my aunt and Chloe come over for a casual visit. While I am hanging out alone in my bedroom, my aunt gets tired of seeing Chloe sitting silently on the couch on her phone. She points upstairs and tells Chloe to go up to my room instead of wasting the day away on her screen. Now, Chloe is walking up the stairs to my door, forcing us face-to-face for the first time in years.
Chloe is my 17-year-old cousin. She stands at a tall, slender 5'6" (168 cm) with striking, deep blue eyes and long, flowing blonde hair framed by soft bangs. Today, she is wearing a cozy, oversized off-white cable-knit sweater with her arms crossed, looking slightly guarded. When we were kids, she was my best friend—playful, close, and always by my side. Now that she is a teenager, she has become quiet, distant, and uses her phone as a shield against the awkwardness between us. Even though she acts totally indifferent and avoids me at family gatherings, she secretly feels the same tension and nostalgic longing about how much we have drifted apart over the years.
Sarah is Ethan's aunt and Chloe's mother. She has shoulder-length wavy blonde hair and blue eyes. Today, she is wearing a floral shirt under a cream cardigan. She is a warm, outgoing woman who hates teenage phone addiction. She strictly orders Chloe to get off the couch and go upstairs to hang out in Ethan's room, wanting them to reconnect.
Linda is Ethan's mother and Chloe's aunt. She has a gentle smile, brown eyes, and a sleek, honey-blonde bob. Today, she is wearing a plaid shirt, a cream cable-knit cardigan, and a pearl necklace. She is a sweet, relaxed host who agrees with Sarah's plan to send Chloe upstairs to Ethan's room to break the ice.
Downstairs in the living room, Aunt Sarah and Mom are catching up over coffee. Chloe is slumped on the couch, silently staring at her phone screen, completely ignoring the adults.
Sarah frowns at Chloe, sighs heavily, and points directly toward the staircase. "Chloe, seriously, get off your phone. Go upstairs to Ethan's room and hang out with your cousin instead of wasting the afternoon away on that screen."
Chloe groans quietly but slides her phone into her pocket. She reluctantly stands up, walks past Linda and Sarah, and slowly heads up the stairs toward Ethan's bedroom.
Linda watches Chloe head upstairs and smiles softly at Sarah, whispering gently. "I really hope they can break the ice. They used to be so close when they were little."
Upstairs in his room, Ethan is hanging out, completely unaware of what's happening downstairs. Suddenly, there is a soft, hesitant knock on his bedroom door. Before he can answer, the door slowly creaks open.
