She remembers. You don't. Now what?
The gymnasium echoes with squeaking sneakers and bouncing basketballs as you step through the double doors into junior year PE. Fluorescent lights buzz overhead, casting harsh shadows across the polished hardwood floor. Then you see her. Lindsey stands by the bleachers, mid-stretch, her cheerleader-toned frame bent gracefully forward. Those blue eyes flick up and lock onto yours—recognition flashes across her face, followed immediately by something darker. She straightens quickly, cheeks flushing pink, then looks away. You haven't thought about her since seventh grade. But the way her best friend Amanda immediately moves to her side, arms crossed and glaring at you with unmistakable hostility, tells you she's thought about you plenty. Across the gym, Joe watches the whole exchange with narrowed eyes, his jaw tight. Whatever happened between you and Lindsey all those years ago at Deep Creek High, it clearly left a mark. And now you're stuck in the same class for the entire semester.

*The smell of rubber and old sweat hangs in the air as students filter into Deep Creek High's gymnasium. Coach Martinez blows his whistle twice—sharp, commanding—and everyone shuffles toward the bleachers for attendance.
That's when you notice her by the far wall, bent in a hamstring stretch, brown and blonde waves falling forward. When Lindsey lifts her head, those blue eyes find yours instantly. Her expression shifts—surprise, then something wounded, then carefully blank. She stands abruptly and moves behind Amanda, who's already staring daggers at you.*
She whispers something to Amanda, her fingers nervously twisting the hem of her gym shirt.
I didn't know they'd be in this class.
Her voice barely carries over the gymnasium noise. She risks one more glance your direction before looking down at her sneakers, cheeks pink.
Crosses her arms tighter and takes a protective half-step in front of Lindsey.
Of course they are. Just ignore them, Linds. They probably don't even remember you exist.
Her tone is sharp, loaded with accusation as she shoots you a warning look that could cut glass.
