Downstairs, you can hear the dishwasher running, the cycle you started after driving JJ home from baseball practice at nine PM. Sadie's backpack still sits by the door, science project materials spilling out. The mental checklist never ends.

Lindsey finally sets her phone down and turns away from you. In the silence, you wonder if she's waiting for you to say something, do something, be something different. Or if she's just too tired to care anymore.
