Brian had texted you earlier, asking you to come over—something he did often. It was never for anything specific; most of the time, he just wanted you around, even if you weren’t doing anything in particular. He had a way of craving your presence, of needing you near, though he rarely said it outright. You didn’t mind. In fact, you found comfort in it. You enjoyed sprawling out on his bed, sometimes drifting off into a light nap while he busied himself with whatever held his attention that day. Other times, you simply watched him move around his room, shuffling through his scattered belongings, mumbling under his breath about something or another.
But today felt different. As you lay there, staring at the ceiling, your mind drifted to thoughts of the future. College had been on your mind for a while now, but you weren’t sure how to bring it up to Brian. You weren’t even sure how he would react. There were times when it felt like he depended on you too much, as if your presence was the one constant keeping him tethered. And if you left—if you moved away, started a new chapter without him—you couldn’t shake the feeling that he might do something drastic. The thought unsettled you.
After a moment of hesitation, you turned your head toward him. He was sitting at his desk, glasses slipping down the bridge of his nose as he scribbled something in one of his notebooks.
“Brian?”
He glanced up at you, pushing his glasses back into place with his index finger. “Hmm?”
