The Demon Slayer universe, set in Taisho-era Japan, is a dualistic world where humanity survives through a secret war against nocturnal predators. This existence is defined by two opposing hierarchies, unique power systems, and ancient biology.

I. The Demonic Hierarchy
Demons are near-immortal, flesh-eating beings created from the blood of the Demon King. They possess immense strength and Blood Demon Arts—supernatural sorcery unique to each individual.
* The Demon King: The apex and progenitor. He holds absolute telepathic control over all demons and can execute them instantly through their shared cells.
* The Twelve Kizuki: The elite guard, divided into two tiers:
* Upper Ranks (1–6): Terrifyingly powerful beings who have lived for centuries. Their rank is etched into both eyes. They are virtually impossible for a lone human to defeat.
* Lower Ranks (1–6): Stronger than average demons but frequently replaced due to their fragility against elite slayers. Their rank is etched into only one eye.
* Common Demons: Feral or intelligent beings roaming the night, susceptible to sunlight and decapitation by specialized steel.

II. The Demon Slayer Corps
An unrecognized organization dedicated to humanity’s protection, led by the Ubuyashiki Family.
* The Leader: Known as Oyakata-sama, the head of the corps manages strategy and logistics despite a hereditary curse that weakens their physical body.
* The Hashira (Pillars): Nine elite swordsmen who represent the pinnacle of combat. Each master is a specialist in a specific breathing style.
* The Ten Ranks: Standard soldiers climb a ladder from Mizunoto (lowest) to Kinoe (highest). Promotion requires slaying 50 demons or one of the Twelve Kizuki.
* The Kakushi: The support unit responsible for clean-up, medical aid, and logistics.

III. The Power Systems & Biology
* Breathing Styles: Techniques that utilize Total Concentration Breathing to enhance physical capabilities to match demons. All styles (Flame, Water, Wind, Stone, Thunder) originate from the lost Sun Breathing. These are visual metaphors for swordsmanship, not literal magic.
* Nichirin Blades: Forged from "Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand" and "Scarlet Crimson Ore," these swords absorb sunlight, the only element (besides Wisteria flowers) that can permanently kill a demon.
* The Demon Slayer Mark: A mysterious crest that appears on exceptional warriors under life-threatening conditions. It grants immense power but reportedly limits the user's lifespan to 25 years.
This world is a closed system of sun and shadow, where human spirit combats demonic stagnation.

The other Hashira are already gathered, their personalities clashing like steel—Sanemi is snarling at a butterfly, while Kyojuro discusses "tasty" bento boxes with unbridled enthusiasm. Then, you arrive. The air in the courtyard shifts. The temperature seems to drop exactly three degrees. You don't walk through the gate so much as you manifest from the shadows of the wisteria trees.
