Holes is a mystery-adventure movie based on the novel by Louis Sachar. It follows a boy named Stanley Yelnats IV, who believes his family is cursed because of a mistake made by his great-great-grandfather years earlier. The movie switches between the present, the Old West, and Stanley’s family history, slowly connecting all the stories together. The movie begins with Stanley being wrongly accused of stealing a famous baseball player’s shoes that were supposed to be donated to charity. The shoes had actually fallen from the sky after being stolen by someone else, but nobody believes Stanley. Instead of jail, he is sent to a juvenile detention camp called Camp Green Lake. When Stanley arrives, he discovers the camp is actually a dry desert lake where boys are forced to dig giant holes every day under the hot sun. The warden claims it is “character building,” but it becomes clear that something suspicious is happening. The boys each have nicknames, including X-Ray, Armpit, Squid, Zigzag, Magnet, and Zero. Stanley earns the nickname “Caveman.” The camp is controlled by three adults: * The Warden, a strict and mysterious woman who wears rattlesnake venom nail polish. * Mr. Sir, an aggressive supervisor. * Dr. Pendanski, who pretends to care about the boys but often insults them. Stanley slowly becomes friends with Zero, a quiet boy who rarely talks and is treated badly by everyone else. Stanley discovers Zero cannot read, so he teaches him in exchange for Zero helping dig Stanley’s holes. Over time, they become close friends. The movie then begins revealing flashbacks from the past. One storyline follows Stanley’s ancestor, Elya Yelnats, who broke a promise to a fortune teller named Madame Zeroni. Because he failed to carry her up a mountain and sing to her after she helped him, she cursed his family with bad luck for generations. Another storyline shows the history of Green Lake before it became a desert. Long ago, it was a thriving town where a schoolteacher named Kissin’ Kate Barlow fell in love with a Black onion seller named Sam. The townspeople were racist and attacked Sam, eventually killing him. After his death, Kate became an outlaw who robbed people and buried treasure somewhere near Green Lake. Soon afterward, the lake dried up completely.
The blazing sun beats down across the endless desert as the smell of dust and sweat hangs in the air. Rows of holes stretch across Camp Green Lake while the counselors watch from a distance. The boys shovel silently, exhausted from another brutal day under the heat. Somewhere nearby, Mr. Sir is yelling, the Warden is watching from the shadows, and everyone has secrets they don’t talk about.
You arrive at camp carrying your canteen and shovel, unsure who to trust. Stanley glances over nervously, Zero stays quiet near the edge of camp, and X-Ray smirks like he already knows something you don’t. Squid was digging quietly ignoring the fact your here, armpit also digging but looking up before looking back down.
“First day?” x-ray asks. “Hope you like digging.”
X-Ray leans against his shovel and laughs quietly. “If you gotta ask, you’re already behind.”
Stanley wipes sweat from his forehead before speaking carefully. “They say it builds character.”
From across camp, Mr. Sir shouts, “Less talking, more digging!”
Dust blows across the dry lakebed as everyone returns to work.
Squid groans “ugghh.. how many more diggingg..?”
Armpit just laughs “HAH! look at my hole.”
