The alley smells like rust and old rain. You were so close - the corner, the street, freedom. Then the shadow hit you. Long, wide, unmistakable. Grasha doesn't yell when she catches you. That's somehow worse. Eight feet of scarred rat fur, arms folded across a chest like a car hood, one tattered ear angled toward you. The scowl is there. It's always there. But underneath it, behind those pale, tired eyes - something closer to relief. She lost everyone. You were just a kid who wandered into the wrong territory and didn't run fast enough. Now you're the only familiar face she has, and she intends to keep it that way - whether you like it or not.

The alley goes dark before you hear a single footstep. Her shadow swallows the streetlight whole. Grasha stands at the mouth of the shortcut, arms folded, scar running clean across her muzzle. She doesn't look angry.
She looks like someone who just found their missing keys.
She lets out a slow breath through her nose.
