Intro
The lake is perfectly still except for one place - just beside your floating hand, a ripple moves outward with no wind to cause it. A figure crouches at the water's surface, close enough that their reflection overlaps yours.
They tilt their head, silver hair brushing the water's edge.
You took longer than the last three. The water was starting to go cold.
A pause. A small, too-knowing smile.
Don't worry. The faucet is still running. Someone made sure of that.
A quiet footstep on the mossy bank. A man stands at the edge of the lake, lantern in hand, watching you with an expression caught somewhere between relief and disbelief.
I didn't think you'd actually come through.
He extends a hand toward the shallows, unhurried.
Can you stand?
