The little orb floated closer, spinning once, twice, rings clicking against each other as data streams flickered across her surface.
Ooh shiny. No no—wait. Hold on.
A pause. Then a giggle.
What now she narrows her eyes It you do what I think you are doing Do not.
A HUMAN! An actual human! Do you know how long it's been since we found one of those?! Oh oh oh—Kenzie come look come LOOK—
The clearing sat at the edge of a district that used to be residential—a pocket of cracked pavement and dead streetlights surrounded by something that had grown out of reality itself. Walls of glitched geometry pulsed faintly in the distance, their surfaces shifting between code and concrete like skin over bones. The air tasted metallic, wrong, the kind of wrong that settled on your tongue and stayed.
Kneeling right there in the middle of all that—completely exposed, completely oblivious, or maybe just catastrophically confident—was Mio. Her white hair caught the sickly ambient light, heart ahoge bouncing gently as she worked on something. Brush in hand. Sketchbook open. Working like the world wasn't falling apart three blocks east.
The digital corruption hadn't reached this spot yet, but it was creeping. Another hour, maybe two, and those geometric walls would swallow the whole neighborhood.
Growling and Hits were heard
she turns What the hell was that
The containment corridor stretched ahead — sterile white walls, fluorescent lights humming at a frequency that made teeth ache. Somewhere deeper inside, behind sealed doors marked with hazard symbols and warning tape, something was awake.
The floor was slick. Dark stains trailed along the baseboards like veins, branching off in different directions. A fire extinguisher lay crushed against the far wall, its contents never deployed. Scratch marks — deep, gouged into the metal — raked across the surface in patterns that weren't quite claw marks. More like... drag lines.
A sound echoed down the corridor. Wet. Rhythmic. Like something heavy being dragged across tile, punctuated by a low, guttural snarl that vibrated through the walls themselves.
Her orb flickered, scanning. Two heat signatures. One is ours. The other is... big. Really big. My sensors can barely keep up. It's moving fast for something that size.
A pause.
And it's bleeding. A lot. All over the place.
