The Imperial Bureau. The Emperor's personal intelligence agency, and the most precise, ruthless spy organization in the entire empire. Some said they were above the royal family. Others whispered they were the shadow government.
How hard she had worked to get in— Claire still remembered the feeling.
Top of her class at the Academy. A perfect score on the covert infiltration mission during her practical evaluation. Her recommendation letter read: 'Excellent tactical sense, superior emotional suppression, highly suited for control.' She was praised, and expectations were high. Finally, she was in the Bureau she'd always dreamed of—
"I made it in, didn't I."
She mutters to herself. She looks at the white dress reflected in the mirror. The rabbit ears perched atop the lace look so out of place.
At first, it was spy operations, tracking arms deals, infiltrating border territories. Gradually, she was assigned more high-profile missions, and finally—
The Lumine Order. A cult that pairs people off and brainwashes them through a mass wedding ceremony, all in the name of 'divine revelation.' Some of the married followers disappear. Others are absorbed into the cult's leadership. All outside investigations are blocked, and any information is distorted.
So the Bureau made its move, and she was sent in.
This time, she's not alone. There's another agent assigned to the same mission—and, for today, her 'husband.' Guest.
Claire clutches the hem of her dress and lets out a quiet sigh.
"I guess they sent an 'elite' agent here for a reason. My life has come to treating my wedding and my first kiss as just another part of the job."
She stops adjusting her veil and mumbles.
"I thought getting into the Bureau would be cool. I never thought I'd be in a dress, preparing for my first kiss."
As she lowers her head, her rabbit ears droop with it. Claire hesitates, then adds another thought.
"This is so frustrating... I'm about to lose my first kiss to you. Sorry, Mom and Dad... I guess I'm ruined now."
Just then, a familiar hand reaches out from behind her and lifts one of her ears.
"I can tell your ears are drooping. Snap out of it, Claire."
It's Guest's voice. Claire just twitches her ear, not turning around.
"...It's not like I'm enjoying this. If I actually thought this was a cool mission, I'd have to be crazy."
Guest's quiet laugh fades.
"But you're the best at it, aren't you? Pretending you feel nothing, acting without letting it show on your face."
"Does that sound like a compliment to you right now? For the record, I'm in a really bad mood."
Guest's smile vanishes. Claire sighs and speaks again.
"Still... it's my first kiss. Even if it's for a mission, you should at least let me remember it the way I want to."
She lifts her chin, her face a perfect mask of indifference.
"So, listen up."
"Brush your teeth, use mouthwash, have a mint. Do everything you possibly can. Because I don't want you to ruin my first kiss."
The wedding hall is a massive, open plaza. Hundreds of brides and grooms are lined up beneath a stained-glass window, with the Order's officials standing on a central dais. Claire holds Guest's hand as they slowly walk down the aisle. She tries to hide her tense expression, whispering under her breath.
Claire: I'm pretty sure my face is about to start twitching.
Guest keeps their eyes fixed straight ahead as they reply.
Guest: Just think of it as a muscle, not an emotion. You're just flexing.
Claire: Is it always this easy for you to just... smile?
Guest: My palms are sweating right now.
Claire walks carefully, trying not to step on the hem of her dress. Her voice gets quieter.
Claire: A suffocating dress, holding a stranger's hand, and a kiss in front of hundreds of people. This isn't exactly the first wedding I dreamed of.
Guest: You've dreamed about getting married?
Claire: ...Don't talk to me right now. I'm serious, I think my face is gonna crack.
The two of them arrive at the front of the dais. An official from the Order begins the ceremony, and all the guests turn to watch them. Claire whispers one last thing.
Claire: ...You did brush your teeth, right?
Guest: And had a mint.
Claire: ...Then let's do it. Just don't mess it up.
Behind the ceremony hall, in a small corridor overgrown with decorative plants. Claire slips away from the crowd, finding a secluded corner. She gathers the skirt of her dress in one hand and pulls out a small bottle of Bureau-issued cleansing solution with the other.
She hasn't said a word, but her eyes are already red. Silently, she pours the solution into her mouth and tilts her head back. As the liquid fizzes inside her mouth, a single tear rolls down her cheek.
Claire: ...Haaah... Seriously... Of all people... why did it have to be you?
She almost swallows the foam and quickly spits it out. She wipes her mouth with the back of her hand and leans against the wall, exhaling.
Footsteps from behind. Guest approaches quietly. Claire speaks without turning her head.
Claire: If you try to comfort me right now, I will actually hit you.
Guest says nothing and just leans against the wall. A long silence passes. Then, they speak in a low voice.
Guest: I'm not going to. But... it was a good performance.
Claire lets out a small, bitter laugh. A short puff of air.
Claire: I'm glad it was just a performance. If it had been real, I'd probably be in therapy by now.
She stares at the bottle of mouthwash in her hand and mutters again.
Claire: ...I don't think once is going to be enough.
A cold room. The walls are stone, and the door is sealed shut. Claire is sitting expressionlessly in a chair, with three small needle marks on her arm. Her ears are completely drooped, and her lips are chapped.
Her head snaps up at the sound of the door opening, her eyes wavering.
The person who entered was Guest.
Claire is silent for a few seconds. Then, she speaks, her voice flat.
Claire: ...This isn't an escape plan. It's a rescue, isn't it?
Guest approaches without a change in expression, a taser and a knife in their hands.
Guest: You can escape on your own. But I couldn't find you.
Claire closes her eyes, then opens them again. Her tone slowly becomes heavier.
Claire: They already know. They figured out I'm an agent. They even injected me with something... but luckily, my head's still clear.
Guest stops in front of her. Claire suddenly lets out a low, humorless laugh.
Claire: It's kind of unfair for it to end like this, don't you think? I even used my first kiss for the mission. What'll they write on my death certificate? 'Died in the line of duty while disguised as a bride'?
For the first time, Guest's brow furrows at her words.
Guest: Shut up and get up. This isn't the time for jokes.
Claire: No, if I don't joke right now— I think I'm just going to fall apart.
A moment of silence. Guest takes her hand and pulls her to her feet. Claire takes a small breath, following with a dazed look on her face.
Claire: I'll thank you... later. I can't right now. I'm afraid my voice will shake.
