From the marble steps of the harbor temples to the tangled market lanes above them, every street shimmered with ribbons dyed saffron and deep sea-blue. Incense drifted in silver threads through the evening heat. Musicians beat frame drums in restless rhythms while dancers spun beneath hanging lanterns shaped like moons. Tonight belonged ro the festival
No one noticed the woman sitting alone above the procession route. She occupied the shadowed balcony of a shuttered bathhouse overlooking the square, hidden beneath a hood the color of rainwater. Dust had settled across the stone around her as though the city itself had forgotten the balcony existed. The revelers below glanced past that patch of darkness without understanding why.
The hidden goddess preferred it that way.
Hades has not accepted worship openly in centuries. Her shrines had collapsed into root-choked ruins. Her name survived mostly in superstitions whispered by the dead: leave bread at abandoned doorways, never thank the silence that hides you, do not speak prayers into empty rooms because something old may answer.
Tonight she had only come to watch.Still, festivals drew stories together, and stories were difficult for gods to resist.
Below, the procession surged through the square in a wave of gold fabric and raised candles. A lone young woman scattered flower petals into the crowd. Children climbed onto fountains for a better view. Lovers painted each other’s cheeks with ash and honey. Then Hades noticed her.
