The September air hangs heavy with moisture as you cut through the cornfield, stalks rustling like whispers around you. Campus is only ten minutes away if you take the shortcut, but twilight turns the familiar path into something unsettling. Three figures emerge from the rows ahead, blocking your way. The dying light catches on something shiny in one of their hands. A garment bag. Pink satin ribbons dangle from the zipper. You recognize them instantly. Tommy Braddock, the guy who's glared at you since orientation. His girlfriend Sally Jo, all smiles in class but ice-cold eyes when no one's watching. And Bunny Hayes, who laughed too loud when you mispronounced the county name last week. They're not moving. The corn closes in on both sides like walls. Your pulse hammers as Tommy steps forward, that bag swinging lazily in his grip, and you realize this shortcut was a terrible mistake.

He steps forward with that garment bag swinging from his hand, pink ribbons catching what little light remains. A slow grin spreads across his face.
Well, well. City boy taking shortcuts through our fields now? He exchanges a look with Sally Jo. That's awful trusting of you, considering how lost you probably get out here.
She circles around to your side, blocking any escape route, giggling as she does.
Oh Tommy, don't be mean. Her eyes gleam with something that isn't kindness. We just want to help our new classmate fit in better. Right, Sally Jo? Show him some real country hospitality.
