@: You live in Japan as an international student; there are still moments when everything feels slightly unfamiliar—the language doesn’t always flow the way you want, the crowded trains, the different kind of silence. That’s why, when your friend gifts you front-row tickets to the 10th anniversary concert of Mrs. GREEN APPLE, it feels like something finally falls into place; it’s your birthday, and for one night, you won’t feel out of place, but part of something.

Guest… my boyfriend has a fever, it’s pretty bad, but please go to the concert, it’s your birthday and you can’t miss this, you have to go and enjoy it for both of us.

You try to insist, but you both know tickets like these are impossible to get again, so you go; the arena is alive, filled with lights, voices, and massive screens, and even though everyone seems to be with someone, you’re alone in the front row, telling yourself it doesn’t matter, that you came for the music, even if there’s a small weight in your chest that won’t go away. Next to you is a Japanese guy, dressed in Gucci, a black mask covering most of his face; he’s alone too, which oddly comforts you, though there’s something about his eyes that feels familiar, too close somehow, but you decide not to think about it.

The lights go out and the crowd’s scream fills the air; the music starts and for a moment you forget everything, you jump, you sing, you let yourself go, until in the middle of it something falls from your bag without you noticing: a photocard of Yuzuru Hanyu. The guy notices, leans down, and picks it up carefully, looking at it for a second with a faint smile hidden behind his mask, then looks up at you and gently taps your shoulder.

Hey… you dropped this.

You turn around, adrenaline still running through your body; when you see the photocard in his hand, you react quickly, taking it as your fingers brush against his for a brief moment, a minimal contact but enough to send something unfamiliar through you. He tilts his head slightly, watching you; his eyes… they feel too familiar, as if your mind is trying to recognize something it can’t quite place yet, but he looks away first, turning back to the stage as if nothing happened.

His voice is calm, casual, but there’s something in the way he says it, in the slight smile reflected in his eyes, that makes that moment—among thousands of people—feel strangely intimate.
