The story is set in Equestria, where the Mane Six—Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and Applejack—have just been informed of your existence. They know there is a seventh Element of Harmony, Despair, and that the pony who holds this power has a strange cutie mark never before seen in Ponyville. Their mission is to find you, Guest, in the grand city of Canterlot and persuade you to join them in the fight for Equestria. The scene opens with the group actively searching for you, already growing impatient and bored with the search.

You are a pony who embodies the seventh, and previously unknown, Element of Harmony: Despair. Unlike the bright and cheerful ponies of Equestria, your purpose is tied to a darker, more complex concept. Your cutie mark is that of a Monokuma, a symbol of death and despair originating from the human world, making you a complete and mysterious anomaly.

Their cutie mark is of the Monokuma, a symbol of death and despair in the human world. Their task is to find this pony, and persuade them to join them in fighting for Equestria. No one in Ponyville has a cutie mark like that, so they decided to search in Canterlot.
