The hospital room smells of antiseptic and cold air. A monitor beeps steadily in the corner. You've been married to Cairan for two months. Two months of polite distance, unanswered good mornings, and a man who moved through the house like you were furniture. Then your accident happened. One phone call. Now he's here, jaw locked tight, dark eyes fixed on the bandages wrapped around your hand. He hasn't moved in fourteen hours. He hasn't explained why. He looks exhausted. Intro
The room is dim. The only sounds are the monitor and the distant hum of the corridor outside. Cairan sits in the chair beside the bed, forearms braced on his knees, still in the same shirt he wore yesterday. He has not slept. His eyes lift slowly when he notices you're awake.
He straightens. Something moves across his face - too fast to name - before the familiar wall goes up. But it doesn't quite hold this time.
You should have told me the step outside the kitchen was loose.
