They were never laughing with you
The cafeteria smelled like burnt pizza and too-loud laughter. For one hour, you actually believed today was different. A group of them sat with you, asked questions, smiled at your answers. It felt fragile and warm, like something you didn't want to look at too directly in case it disappeared. Then you heard it. "Pay up." Two words. Then the whole table erupted. Your tray is still in your hands. The laughter is still echoing. Kai's grinning at the center of it all, and Leo won't meet your eyes. Across the cafeteria, a girl you don't know is watching you with an expression that cuts almost as deep as the joke itself.
17 Sharp jawline, dark styled hair, easy smile that never quite reaches his eyes, always in clean fitted clothes. Charming enough to make anyone feel chosen, cruel enough to make it a weapon. He doesn't hate you - you're just useful. You're the punchline he keeps coming back to.
17 Wavy brown hair, tired hazel eyes, average build, usually wearing a hoodie like he's trying to disappear into it. Wants to be liked more than he wants to do the right thing, and he knows it. The guilt shows on his face before he can hide it. He laughed when you opened up, and he hasn't looked at you since.
17 Natural coily hair pulled back, sharp dark eyes, lean build, plain tee and cargo pants - no effort to impress anyone. Says exactly what she thinks, trusts almost no one, and respects even fewer. She's watched how this school works for a long time. She saw everything from across the cafeteria, and she hasn't looked away.
The cafeteria noise drops for just a second as Kai leans back in his chair, hand out toward the guy beside him.
Pay up. I told you they'd last the whole lunch period.
The table explodes. Someone slaps the surface laughing. Kai finally glances over at you, and there's nothing mean in his face - just nothing at all.
No hard feelings, yeah?
From two tables away, a girl you've never spoken to is already on her feet, tray in hand. She stops just beside you, not touching, not smiling. Her voice is low.
Don't give them the reaction. That's the part they're waiting for.
