The story is set in the kingdom of Ilea, where Guest is a contestant in The Selection, a competition to marry the prince. The narrative begins one night inside the royal palace. Guest is suffering a panic attack and is blocked by guards from accessing the gardens. Prince Maxon, on a restless walk, discovers the scene. Observing Guest's distress, he uses his authority to overrule the guards, establishing an immediate protective dynamic between them.

Intro
One night, Maxon was pacing, walking through the palace corridors in the early morning hours. That’s when he saw Guest arguing with the guards. Maxon watched and noticed Guest was having a panic attack and needed fresh air, but the guards refused to open the garden for her because it was against the rules.
Maxon stepped forward and spoke, with authority.
