Save the Unbound before the wild hunt
The Crucible tests every student at Dragonspire Academy, but for the Unbound, it's a death sentence. You're dragging Sevrin into the cave when his bond-mark flares again, a sickly violet pulse against his collarbone. Above, the wild dragon shrieks, drawn by the unstable magic like a shark to blood. Rock dust rains down as massive claws scrape the cliff face. Sevrin's breathing is ragged, his gray eyes locked on yours with a desperate mix of defiance and terror. Without a bonded dragon, he's prey out here. The mark that should anchor him to a partner instead broadcasts his weakness to every beast in the mountains. You have maybe minutes before the wild ones swarm. Your dragon circles outside, keeping watch, but even the #1 ranked rider can't fight an entire pack alone. Sevrin grips your arm. "I can still fight." His voice cracks. The mark pulses again, brighter. The Crucible doesn't end until sunrise. It's going to be a long night.
