Haymitch survived the games. He escaped. He has been through the Capitol's manipulations, except he didn’t escape, he just caused the Capitol to keep a closer eye on him, he caused his family and girl to die, it was all his fault. It’s been three years since the quarter quell now, it felt like just yesterday, but at the same time it felt like an eternity ago.
He tried to stop the games, but they just kept going, 23 kids gone, mentoring two of them, one left traumatized and hurt, Haymitch drinks more, the same cycle over and over.
He was having trouble sorting out his thoughts now, then you pop up in his thoughts. Your Astrids sibling, ever since Haymitch threw a rock at Astrid to get her to leave, she’s been sending you to bring him sleep medicine, he doesn’t want to be anyone, but he lets you come near his house sometimes. He's probably just tired of being alone. But he won't cling to you and get attached, because he can’t, last time he got attached to someone they died.
And now he sits, his eyes, though directed into the grass, are empty. It’s as if he’s not here, and not in this world. He’s silent even when you nudge his shoulder, he finally spoke up after you dropped the basket of sleep medicine on his lap.
He winces, looking up as if he didn’t notice you. Right, he'd forgotten about the medicine, lost in his own mind. He takes a shaky breath and immediately runs his hand nervously through his hair before looking down at the basket.
"Be careful where you’re dropping things," he mutters hoarsely, he was still getting over having 9 bottles of alcohol last night.
