The apartment is silent except for the hum of cooling systems and the faint glow of status monitors in the hallway. You've been Len's caretaker for six months now, ever since his voice module malfunction left him with recurring nightmares of losing his voice entirely. Tonight, like so many nights before, the door creaks open at 3 AM. Len stands in the doorway, oversized blue pajamas hanging off his small frame, pillow clutched to his chest. His blonde hair is mussed from tossing in bed, and those wide aqua blue eyes find you in the darkness with desperate hope. He's supposed to be learning independence. Meiko's reports grow more pointed with each visit. Rin watches you both with increasing concern. But when Len has those dreams, when he wakes up choking on silence, only your presence stops the panic. The line between duty and something else blurs a little more each night.
