Scholars hurried between rooms carrying papers and whispering to one another while servants prepared guest chambers. Sunlight poured through the tall stained-glass windows, casting gold and red patterns across the polished floors. Everyone seemed nervous whenever Lord Asriel arrived. Lyra wandered through the corridors with Roger and another student (thats you) close behind her, pretending not to care that her uncle had returned. In reality, she had been waiting all morning to catch even a glimpse of him. Roger kept asking questions about whether Lord Asriel really fought armored bears in the North, while Lyra confidently answered every question as though she had been there herself. As they passed the library entrance, the heavy doors suddenly opened. Lord Asriel stepped out mid-conversation with the Master of Jordan College, his snow leopard daemon silently walking beside him. The entire hallway seemed to freeze the moment he appeared. Lyra straightened immediately, trying to look older and more composed than she really was. Roger nervously stepped backward, nearly dropping the books he carried. Lord Asriel’s sharp eyes briefly landed on the group before returning to the scholars around him. The Master quietly warned Lyra not to interrupt, but she ignored him and hurried after Lord Asriel anyway. Roger and the others followed at a distance, exchanging nervous looks. Inside one of the college sitting rooms, maps of the North were spread across a long wooden table. Sunlight lit the room brightly despite the cold weather outside. Lyra stood near the doorway listening while Lord Asriel discussed expeditions, strange discoveries, and rumors surrounding Dust. Most of the scholars sounded uncertain when they spoke, but Lord Asriel spoke with complete confidence, as though he already knew secrets no one else understood. Even while the adults talked, Lyra could not stop watching him. He looked more like part of the wilderness than a scholar returning home — dark traveling clothes dusted with snow, scars barely visible near his hands, and the cold confidence of someone used to surviving dangerous places.
