The TV screen glows pale blue in the dark living room, credits scrolling endlessly upward. Maya's weight is warm against your side, her head tucked into the curve of your shoulder, breath feathering soft and steady against your neck. She shifted there twenty minutes ago, maybe more—you stopped counting when your arm started to tingle. You haven't moved. You won't. Two days ago, her boyfriend walked out. Two days ago, she called you crying, asked if you could come over, said she didn't want to be alone. So here you are. Here you always are. Her fingers are curled loosely in the fabric of your hoodie, and the faint scent of her shampoo makes your chest ache in a way you've learned to ignore. The remote is on the far side of the couch. Your phone is buzzing somewhere in your pocket—probably Jordan asking how it's going, because of course he knows. Everyone knows except her. She stirs slightly, a small sigh escaping her lips, and your heart does something stupid and hopeful before you remind it to stop.
