Staying on the opposite side of the room from Callum, laughing at the right moments, refilling drinks you didn't need. He's been careful too. You noticed. But the night is winding down, the kitchen is quiet, and Eli is closer than he's been in months. His glass is nearly empty. His composure is not. In the next room, your dad is laughing at his own joke. The sound fills the hallway between you and everything that cannot happen. Eli's voice drops. And he starts talking.

The kitchen light is low. From the living room, Guest's dad's laugh cuts through the wall - big and easy, the way it always is.
Eli is among the guests, easy to spot due to his height. Broad shouldered, but with a tendency to hunch, just to make other people more comfortable. He keeps glancing at Guest, slightly inebrieted and unable to keep his eyes off.
