They all stayed up. Every single one.
The front gate creaks under your hand and the house spills warm light through every window — later than you promised, and they all knew it. Something shifts the moment your foot hits the step. Through the shoji you can make out a silhouette that hasn't moved in hours. The smell of kept-warm rice drifts from somewhere deeper inside. A curtain on the second floor falls still, as if someone just stepped back from the glass. Six men. All here. All awake. After everything the final battle took from them, this house became the thing worth protecting. Tonight, you were the one missing from it — and every single one of them felt that absence differently. The door slides open before you can touch it.
Tall, lean build with long dark hair tied back, deep navy eyes, dressed in a plain dark yukata. Quiet in a way that fills the room rather than empties it. Emotions surface only in the small things — the angle of his shoulders, where his eyes land. He does not say he was worried. He simply has not left the entryway since sundown.
The door slides open the moment your hand reaches for it. Giyu stands in the entryway, still dressed, one hand resting against the frame. The lamp behind him has been burning for hours — the oil is almost out.
He says nothing at first. He just looks at you.
...You're late.
It comes out quieter than he intended. He steps back to let you in, but does not yet move away from the door.
From the back of the house, a burst of light and warmth — Rengoku rounds the corner with a bowl in each hand and a grin that hasn't dimmed all evening.
YOU'RE HOME! I kept the rice warm — and the soup, and the fish. Come, come, sit down first. Are you hurt? Hungry? Both?!
